Keshav Maharaj Creates History: Becomes the First Spinner to Take Most Wickets for South Africa

Experienced all-rounder Keshav Maharaj has made history by becoming the leading wicket-taker among spinners for the South African cricket team. Previously, this record was held by former cricketer Hugh Tayfield. Tayfield participated in 37 Test matches from 1949 to 1960, taking 170 wickets at an average of 25.91 in 61 innings. Maharaj surpassed Tayfield’s record by taking 3 wickets in the second innings of the second Test against the West Indies, bringing his tally to 171 Test wickets.

Keshav Maharaj’s Test Career

Keshav Maharaj has participated in 52 Test matches for South Africa from 2016 until the time of this report. In 87 innings, he has achieved 171 wickets at an average of 30.78.

Regarding his batting performance, Maharaj has scored 1135 runs in 83 Test innings at an average of 14.74. He has five half-centuries to his name, with his highest individual score being 84 runs.

South Africa Wins Second Test by 40 Runs

In the second Test match, South Africa managed to secure a victory by 40 runs. Winning the toss in Providence, South Africa batted first and scored 160 runs in their first innings. The West Indies, in their first innings, were bowled out for 144 runs.

In their second innings, South Africa scored 246 runs. Chasing a target of 262 runs, the Caribbean team was dismissed for 222 runs. Thus, South Africa won the second Test match by 40 runs.

For his excellent performance in the second Test, Vian Mulder was named ‘Player of the Match,’ while Keshav Maharaj was awarded the ‘Player of the Series’ title for his outstanding performance throughout the series.
